UK ONLINE CHRISTIAN SCIENCE READING ROOM

We can understand what a Pastor is by looking at the meaning of the word ‘shepherd’. The role of a shepherd is to lead the flock. In the same way a pastor leads and guides a church and congregation.

In the Christian Science church, the 'pastor' is the two books, The Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. Individuals study and practise Christian Science at their own pace according to their understanding of the spiritual truths found in the Bible. This allows and encourages self-instruction and contemplation.

The Bible

The Bible was the main focus of Mary Baker Eddy’s study and teachings. As she writes in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures: “The Bible has been my only authority.” S&H 126:29. Through studying the Bible, she found inspiration and guidance, as well as a deeper understanding of the healing principles behind Jesus’ teachings.

When reading and studying, Christian Scientists take the inspired Word of the Bible as their guide to daily life. The Bible is also studied and taught from in Christian Science Sunday Schools. Here teachers encourage students to become familiar with the stories and discuss the helpful and applicable messages given in the Bible, which can help us in life situations.

Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures

Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures is the textbook of Christian Science, the system of spiritual healing discovered by Mary Baker Eddy in 1866. Mrs Eddy wrote the book to help guide in the understanding of the scientific laws practised by Christ Jesus in his healing ministry.

Since its first publication in 1875, readers have testified that studying this book has given them a clear view of their unbroken relationship to God. This in turn, has brought physical, mental, and emotional healing to their lives. Many of these earliest healings can be read in the last chapter, entitled ‘Fruitage’.

The Pastor and Church Services

Readings from these two books form the Sermon in Christian Science church services worldwide, each Sunday. The same sermon for that particular week is read aloud to the congregation, by two democratically elected lay church members. The service also includes music, hymns from the Christian Science Hymnal, silent prayer and the Lord's Prayer, and other scriptural readings chosen by the individual readers. This read sermon is known as The Christian Science Bible Lesson. More about the Bible Lesson
